It was another victory for the Sorcerer Supreme over the weekend as Doctor Strange remained at the top of the box office with $43 million. It had one of the smallest second weekend drop offs for any recent Marvel movie (49%) and it has now made almost $500 million worldwide, helping Disney set a new annual box office record of $2.3 billion. And Rogue One hasn’t even hit theatres yet. In second place, Trolls also held strong, falling just 24.8% to earn $35 million in its second weekend. Debuting in third place, Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival came in above expectations and opened with $24 million, which is a far cry from recent sci-fi hits like The Martian and Interstellar, but it also cost less to make as well. Almost Christmas opened in fourth while Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge rounded out the top 5. Meanwhile the week’s other new release, Shut In, opened in seventh with just $3.7 million.
