First Full Live-Action Ghost in the Shell Trailer

After releasing a handful of short teaser clips back in September, Paramount has finally gone live with the first full trailer for their live action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. The movie stars Scarlett Johansson as “The Major”, a human-cyborg hybrid tasked with tracking down dangerous criminals and extremists. The movie takes place in a futuristic Japan and the trailer is chock full of Japanese imagery, which only draws more attention to the controversy over Johansson’s casting. That being said, director Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) does seem to be delivering some interesting visuals and the movie also stars Takeshi Kitano as Chief Daisuke Aramaki. Perhaps the biggest question mark, however, is the script by Jamie Moss (Street Kings) and Jonathan Herman (Straight Outta Compton). Ghost in the Shell hits theatres on March 31st, 2017; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

Love it! Also, really feeling the Depeche Mode.

Not sure what to make of this. I kind of remember the Ghost in the Shell world being more of a grunge grittier Dystopia. This kind of looks really clean and antiseptic. But I haven’t seen the original in quite some time so my memories might be skewed.

Otherwise there are some interesting visuals but some of the results look mixed to me. Some look way to CG and fake while others look quite cool. Not sure if this is a must see for me but I’m curious.

Oshii’s animated film was a huge hit with Gen X’ers like myself, people who were first wowed by Akira (saw both in the Dobie Theater on the UT campus), and like Akira, it’s window for a ground-breaking live action film closed a long time ago. Certainly GiTS was an influential anime but it’s adherents have leap-frogged it to the live action big and small screen by over a decade. I smell another Aeon Flux.

visually it looks cool. I’ve never seen the anime so I don’t know how anything else compares

Finally a new movie from the movie factory I can get somewhat excited about.

Visually a mismatch of too many things, but as a big sci-fi head I’m curious. :)
