After years of trying to get a Queen biopic off the ground with Sacha Baron Cohen as Freddie Mercury, the project eventually came to an impasse back in 2013 when the remaining members of Queen disagreed with Cohen’s vision for an R-rated movie. Sacha Baron Cohen left the project and since then a couple of different actors and directors have come and gone with little to show for it. The movie seemed close to falling apart completely, until earlier this year when screenwriter Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything) boarded the project. With a completed script in hand, this week we finally have a new director and star all but confirmed: Bryan Singer will direct with Mr. Robot star Rami Malek playing the legendary Queen frontman. Hit the jump for more info.
According to Deadline, Bryan Singer is in talks to direct Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody for 20th Century Fox, New Regency and GK Films. Rami Malek (Mr. Robot, Short Term 12) is attached to play Freddie Mercury. No other casting has been revealed but original Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor will serve as music producers and the project is likely to shoot early next year.
Before Malek, both Dominic Cooper and Ben Whishaw were rumoured for Mercury, while Stephen Frears and Dexter Fletcher (Eddie the Eagle) were frontrunners to direct. Bryan Singer is also in the process of setting up 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, but it sounds like this could actually happen first. Are you looking forward to a Queen biopic and do you think Rami Malek will make a decent Freddie Mercury?
