Monday Morning Box Office Report: Doctor Strange Summons $85 Million Opening

November is off to a strong start as Doctor Strange continued Marvel’s box office dominance over the weekend, opening with a stellar $85 million. That’s pretty much equivalent to Thor: The Dark World, and although it is still in the lower half of Marvel movie openings, it is quite a bit more than their last new solo movie, Ant-Man, made last summer ($57 million). In second place, Fox and DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls earned an estimted $45 million and looks to be a solid family hit. In third place, Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge didn’t do half-bad either; it debuted to $14.8 million and played well to an older demographic. His last film, Apocalypto, also made about the same amount back in 2006, although to be fair was probably a harder sell. Elsewhere Boo! A Madea Halloween fell to fourth, while Ron Howard’s Inferno rounded out the top 5 having made just $26 million thus far. At this point it will be lucky to finish with what Angels & Demons made in its opening weekend.
