Monday Morning Box Office Report: Inferno Gets Burned by Madea

Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween pulled off its second box office upset in a row after edging out Ron Howard’s Inferno by a margin of just $1.7 million. The Halloween-themed comedy dropped just 41% in its second weekend and has now brought in $52 million on a $20 million budget. Inferno was less than lukewarm after debuting with $15 million, only a third of what Angels & Demons made back in 2009. Clearly the 7 year gap was not kind to this sequel, although some have blamed the lacklustre turnout on the World Series as well. What should have been an easy hit has sadly become the third or fourth box office disappointment in a row for Ron Howard. Meanwhile Jack Reacher: Never Go Back fell to third with $9.6 million while The Accountant remained in fourth with $8.5 million. Ouija: Origin of Evil rounded out the top 5.

1. Boo! A Madea Halloween– $16.7M
2. Inferno — $15M
3. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back — $9.6M
4. The Accountant — $8.5M
5. Ouija: Origin of Evil — $7.1M
6. The Girl on the Train — $4.3M
7. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children — $4M
8. Keeping Up with the Joneses — $3.4M
9. Storks — $2.8M
10. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil — $2.1M
