Well that didn’t take long. Less than a week after learning that director Tim Miller had left Deadpool 2, 20th Century Fox is reportedly very close to having found a replacement. We are hearing that stunt coordinator turned director David Leitch is the current frontrunner for the job and that the deal making process is already underway. Leitch is one-half of the directing duo responsible for the Keanu Reeves action flick John Wick, although he chose not to return for that film’s sequel. Hit the jump for more details.
The news was first reported by Mashable, stating that although there is no offer on the table as of yet, he is a “strong frontrunner” to direct Deadpool 2. Variety followed up by reporting that the job was his, although they have since updated to note that other candidates are still in contention. We don’t know who any of those other candidates are, but it sounds like we’ll be hearing something official very soon.
David Leitch already has a comic book adaptation on the way with the Cold War spy thriller The Coldest City starring Charlize Theron. He was also reportedly being eyed to direct Fox’s X-Force movie, so clearly the studio is already a fan of his work. Still, Leitch seems like an odd choice when you consider that the reason for Tim Miller’s departure was said to have been because he wanted a “more stylized” sequel. If that is indeed the case, something tells me Ryan Reynolds won’t see eye-to-eye with Leitch either. Do you think David Leitch is a good choice to direct Deadpool 2?
