Back in 2007 when the first trailer for the original Cloverfield hit theatres, it was the first time anyone had even heard of it. Adding to the mystery, the trailer didn’t provide a title for the film, which only made people even more intrigued. Producer J.J. Abrams used the element of surprise to his advantage, making the movie a hit despite its relatively modest budget. Then last year, he did the same thing with 10 Cloverfield Lane eight years later. Now we’re hearing that a third Cloverfield movie is on the way, but does the name still mean anything if it doesn’t come as a surprise? Hit the jump to find out what we know.
According to The Wrap, the upcoming Bad Robot sci-fi film God Particle is going to be the third entry in the Cloverfield series. Paramount and Bad Robot have yet to confirm or deny this report, but it seems to coincide with previous comments from J.J. Abrams indicating that the Cloverfield name could be used as a way to connect otherwise unrelated movies. There are several other sci-fi movies in development at Bad Robot that could also be a part of this series including Edgar Wright’s Collider.
God Particle is being directed by Julis Onah (The Girl Is in Trouble) and it revolves around a team of astronauts fighting for survival on a space station after their reality is altered. David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ziyi Zhang, Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Brühl and Chris O’Dowd star. Footage from the film is expected to be unveiled at an upcoming Paramount event but no further announcements are expected at this time. God Particle is scheduled to hit theatres on Feb. 24th, 2017. Are you excited to see another Cloverfield movie or is this so-called franchise just a form of false advertising?
