Jon Favreau to Direct The Lion King Remake

Following up on the tremendous success of The Jungle Book earlier this year (currently the fourth highest grossing movie of 2016), Disney and Jon Favreau are teaming up for another adaptation of a beloved Disney animated classic. They were already in the midst of planning a sequel to The Jungle Book, but now it appears that Favreau will put that aside in favour of a new version of The Lion King. At this point I have completely lost track of which live-action remakes have already been announced by Disney, but this one had apparently been the source of speculation for a while now. The current list of upcoming animated to live-action Disney movies is as follows:

  • Beauty and the Beast
  • Cruella
  • Maleficent 2
  • Dumbo
  • Peter Pan
  • The Sword in the Stone
  • Mulan
  • Pinocchio
  • The Jungle Book 2
  • Snow White Spin-Off
  • Aladdin Prequel

The interesting question about The Lion King is whether it will be considered live-action or animated. The press release states that they will follow the “technologically groundbreaking” style of The Jungle Book, but there are no human characters in the original version of The Lion King. So unless they add some people, this will probably be a 100% CG film. Are you excited about a new take on The Lion King or is this one that they should leave alone?

I liked his Jungle Book, but I’m getting tired of all these Disney remakes. Aladdin prequel.. What is that? Just following him being a homeless kid? A Snow White spin off? Wasn’t that The Huntsman? :S

  • On paper, I agree with you. But so far these live action remakes (yes, I think they’re going to be doing them all) have been really great. Movies I’m not initially interested in (Cinderella, Jungle Book, etc.) end up turning out surprisingly really great. Certainly better than the recent Pixar output.

So yeah, at this point I’m interested in seeing what else Disney churns out with these things. The Huntsman was a “version” of Snow White but it wasn’t an exact remake of the original cartoon. It was kind of a twisted reboot. So far, these live action remakes have been almost exactly the same as the cartoon, but in live action retelling.
