Poll Results: Best 2016 Summer Movie

pollresultssummer2016

Last week we asked Film Junk readers to pick their favourite movie from a mostly disappointing 2016 summer line-up. In the end, it came down to a two horse race between Shane Black’s The Nice Guys and Captain America: Civil War with the former just barely holding on for the win. Together, these two movies took in over 50% of the votes with Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon placing a distant third. Taika Waititi’s Hunt for the Wilderpeople came in fourth, which is pretty impressive considering it did not get a wide release, while the stop motion animated film Kubo and the Two Strings tied with Star Trek Beyond to round out the top 5. The number of votes being cast quickly dropped off from there, although it’s interesting to note that both Ghostbusters and Suicide Squad managed to crack the top 10 despite a general feeling of negativity for both. Do you agree with these results?

1. The Nice Guys — 28%
2. Captain America: Civil War — 26%
3. The Neon Demon — 10%

    That list. Oh my.

  • Anyone that thinks that Captain America movie is better than at least 3/4 of the rest of the titles on that list is not my friend.

  • No one important

I thought we needed some perspective so I ventured over to Letterboxd and looked up movies released in 2016, sorted by average rating and looked for films on this list. According to Letterboxd the top 10 films are

    8. Kubo and the two strings
    9. Hunt for the Wilderpeople
    12. Hell or high water
    20. Weiner
    21. Swiss army man
    24. Captain America
    31. The wailing
    32. The nice guys
    40. Finding Dory
    66. Don’t Breathe

The Neon Demon was way back around 200. Suck on that Nicholas. Your movies suck.

More people have actually seen Captain America than 3/4 of the rest of the titles.

I didn’t even think it was better than X-Men.

Am I the only one who was really disappointed by The Nice Guys? This coming from someone who loves Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

  • Matt the Kiwi

If it’s any consolation I was disappointed by The Nice Guys AND I still really loved it. It just didn’t have the polished finish of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and yet still one of the best films of the year (says more about the year).

  • bendoofus

It was okay, bit overrated if I’m honest.

    This summer was D-R-Y

Having Ryan Gosling’s character’s daughter have so much screen time is what killed it for me. She wasn’t funny nor was she adding anything to the film. In fact, every time I saw a hint of spark between Gosling and Crowe she came in and killed it.

But yeah, this summer in general has been utter shit for films.
