Monday Morning Box Office Report: Don’t Breathe Suffocates the Competition


Another horror movie closed out the summer by opening above expectations as Don’t Breathe topped the box office with $26.1 million on a thrifty $10 million budget. That put an end to Suicide Squad‘s three week run as it fell to second place with $12.1 million, while Kubo and the Two Strings had a great second weekend and actually climbed up to third place with $7.9 million. Sausage Party dropped to fourth while Mechanic: Resurrection had a mediocre debut, rounding out the top 5 with $7.5 million. Elsewhere, both Southside with You and Hands of Stone opened outside the top 10 with $3 million and $1.7 million respectively. The latter is expected to expand this Wednesday.
