Monday Morning Box Office Report: Suicide Squad Still Tops, Sausage Party Also Has Girth

Despite a steep 67% drop from its opening weekend, Suicide Squad managed to stay at the top of the box office this past weekend with $43.8 million. Big second weekend declines are nothing new this summer, but the movie has now made $465 million worldwide, making it the 11th highest grossing movie of 2016 (so far). In second place, R-rated animated comedy Sausage Party rose to the occasion with a better-than-expected $33 million, essentially recouping its $19 million budget and then some. Pete’s Dragon opened in third with a mediocre $21.5 million, while Jason Bourne fell to fourth. Bad Moms rounded out the top 5 and continues to be a pleasant surprise for STX Entertainment. The weekend’s other new release, Florence Foster Jenkins starring Meryl Streep, debuted in eighth place with $6.6 million from approximately 1500 screens.
