Over the past few years, I think it’s safe to say that Disney has made the most of their Marvel acquisition, churning out two or three blockbuster movies a year in addition to a handful of successful TV shows on both Netflix and ABC. They have also laid out plans to exploit Star Wars in a similar way, although they are taking a slightly more measured approach for now (ie. just one movie per year). They also have not yet done much with Star Wars on the small screen with the exception of the CG animated series Star Wars Rebels. That could change in the near future, however, as ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey recently confirmed that there are on-going discussions about setting up a Star Wars TV series at the network. Here’s what she had to say:
“The conversations with Lucas, we have had conversations with them and will continue to have conversations with them. I think it would be wonderful if we could find a way to extend that brand into our programming… [Talks] are ongoing. We don’t have an official timeline yet.”
While that is far from a confirmation that a new show is happening, it is at least an indication that it is being talked about. She also would not comment on whether it was a live-action series, but that seems to be a safe assumption… especially since there was a lot of work put into a live-action series called Star Wars: Underworld a few years back that ended up getting shelved. Quite honestly, I’d be very surprised if it doesn’t happen, but the main challenge will be finding a way to keep the budgets down. If the new Star Trek TV series ends up being successful, that could give them even more motivation to make it happen. Would you like to see a Star Wars live-action TV show or will it be impossible to live up to fans’ expectations?
