Author: The JT LeRoy Story Trailer

Along with Tickled, Weiner and Nuts!, here is another documentary coming out of Sundance this year that deals in deception and scandals. Back in the late ’90s and early 2000s, JT LeRoy became an instant literary sensation after publishing his debut novel Sarah. The book was purported to be autobiographical, based on his childhood experiences as the pimped-out son of a truck stop prostitute who struggled with HIV and drug addiction. Eventually, however, it was revealed that JT LeRoy was the invention of writer Laura Albert, who had hired a family member to pose as LeRoy for public appearances. As the truth behind the hoax went public, many people were angry including various celebrities who had befriended LeRoy. Still, the question remains… does this deception invalidate her work or does it only make it more impressive and interesting? Director Jeff Feuerzeig (The Devil and Daniel Johnston) lets Albert tell her side of the story in this well-received documentary. Author: The JT LeRoy Story hits select theatres on Sept. 9th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
