Monday Morning Box Office Report: The Secret Life of Pets Spooks Ghostbusters

For the second weekend in a row Illumination Entertainment’s The Secret Life of Pets marked its territory at the top of box office, earning another $50.6 million domestically. Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters was forced to settle for a second place debut, although it still opened fairly strong with $46 million. That’s the biggest opening for Paul Feig to date (The Heat held his previous record with $39 million) and it also falls somewhere between the opening weekend numbers for the original Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II when adjusted for inflation. The big question is whether it will continue to perform well over the next few weeks. Meanwhile The Legend of Tarzan fell to #3 and Finding Dory was very close behind in fourth place, having now passed Captain America: Civil War to become the biggest movie of the year domestically and the biggest animated movie of all time in the U.S. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates rounded out the top 5.

1. The Secret Life of Pets — $50.6M
2. Ghostbusters — $46M
3. The Legend of Tarzan — $11.1M
4. Finding Dory — $11M
5. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates — $7.5M
6. The Purge: Election Year — $6.1M
7. Central Intelligence — $5.3M
8. The Infiltrator — $5.3M
9. The BFG — $3.7M
10. Independence Day: Resurgence — $3.5M
