Jake Gyllenhaal to Star in Ubisoft’s The Division Movie

Six years after starring in a dubious Disney adaptation of one Ubisoft video game, it looks like Jake Gyllenhaal may be getting a second shot at a movie based on one of their IPs. Back in 2010, Gyllenhaal played the titular prince in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which at the time sparked a whitewashing controversy and earned less than favourable reviews. Now we are hearing that he is also attached to star in The Division, an upcoming movie based on Ubisoft’s latest blockbuster title, which earned $330 million in its first five days back in March. Hit the jump for the full scoop.

According to Variety, Ubisoft is developing a movie based on Tom Clancy’s The Division, their recent open world third-person shooter that takes place in a dystopian New York City following a smallpox pandemic. Jake Gyllenhaal is reportedly attached to star and produce; Ubisoft will likely look to add another actor before they shop it around to studios. Although there has been no official word from Ubisoft, we can probably expect an announcement at E3 this month.

Ubisoft has the Assassin’s Creed movie hitting theatres this December and they are also developing a Splinter Cell movie with Tom Hardy. A movie based on The Division seems like a no brainer considering that it was their fastest-selling game ever. They already produced a several YouTube shorts to help promote the game (see below). It will also be interesting to see if this forces Sony to get the ball rolling on their The Last of Us movie. Do you think The Division could make for a good movie?
