Breaking a Monster Trailer: A Documentary About Tween Metal Band Unlocking the Truth

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Luke Meyer and Andrew Neel, the duo behind the stellar documentaries Darkon and New World Order. While Andrew Neel has apparently been pursuing some fictional projects, Luke Meyer is back this year with another intriguing non-fiction feature called Breaking a Monster. This is a rock doc about Unlocking the Truth, a metal band from Brooklyn made up of three young men who signed a $1.8 million deal with Sony before they entered high school. It looks to explore both the excitement and pressure of stardom as well as the darker side of dealing with the music biz at such a young age. Breaking a Monster hits theatres in New York and L.A. on June 24th and July 1st before expanding further in July. Check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

I’m interested although I fear I have too much familiarity with their material, seeing how they’ve already published so many videos documenting their rise. Their original street performances and interviews were most captivating.

  • This seems really familiar, did this play at Hot Docs two years ago or something? I remember you guys talking about something similar to this.

Yes I believe Jay saw it last year, can’t remember if it was at Hot Docs or not.

Seems like similar territory in some ways to A Band Called Death, but I look forward to seeing this when I get a chance.

This comment sent me down a Youtube rabbit hole last night, so thanks. I really enjoyed the energy of the 30 minute “last performance in Times Square.” They were practicing their rock star moves on that one!
