Alicia Vikander is Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider Reboot

It’s been a few years since we heard that Warner Brothers and GK Films were planning to reboot the Tomb Raider franchise on the big screen without Angelina Jolie in the lead role. It made sense, obviously, especially with the video game series going back to a younger Lara Croft as well, but the question was who could replace a big name like Angelina Jolie? We’ve been hearing rumours for the past month or so that Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Daisy Ridley was in talks for the role. Ultimately, however, it appears that they have decided to go with a slightly more experienced actress for the job. That’s right, Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander is your new Lara Croft. Hit the jump for more details.

According to THR, Alicia Vikander has signed on to star in Tomb Raider for MGM, Warner Bros. and GK Films. She recently won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in The Danish Girl and last year alone she also appeared in Ex Machina, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Burnt. There is no doubt that her career has been exploding as of late and this would seem to be the major leading role that she deserves.

The new Tomb Raider movie will be directed by Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug (The Wave) from a script by Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Hibernation). We still don’t know much about the plot except for the fact that it will involve “a young and untested Croft fighting to survive her first adventure.” Do you think Alicia Vikander is a good choice to play Lara Croft?

I would’ve gone with Alexandra D-D-Daddario (excuse the stutter) but given how forgettable the previous Tomb Raider movies were, it’s really hard to care.

Cool casting.. Daisy Ridley should probably try to make a few smaller films to build her acting career, now that she is secure in a huge franchise as Star Wars.. :)
