Prince 1958-2016

It’s been a difficult few months with the passing of such well-known and beloved celebrities as David Bowie, Alan Rickman and Garry Shandling, but now today it appears that another iconic entertainer has passed away. Singer / songwriter Prince is confirmed to have died after his body was found this morning at his Paisley Park recording studio in Minnesota. He had recently cancelled some shows as a result of the flu and on Friday he had been rushed to the hospital due to an unknown medical emergency but the next night he made a public appearance and seemed to be okay. The exact cause of death is still unknown. Prince remains one of the best-selling artists of all time and won seven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe and an Academy Award throughout his career. He was 57 years old.

Prince Rogers Nelson was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and released his first album at the age of 20. His second album went platinum and his career took off, eventually leading to him starring in his own film, the 1984 musical Purple Rain, which won an Oscar for Best Original Song Score. In the late ’80s he provided music for Tim Burton’s Batman soundtrack, directed and starred in Under the Cherry Moon and Graffiti Bridge, and a few years later he changed his name to a symbol. Throughout the 2000s he continued to release albums, including the highly successful Musicology, was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and performed at the Super Bowl in 2007. Most recently he had released HITnRUN Phase One and Two and was said to have been working on a memoir. There is no question that the man is a legend and will be remembered for his great music and enigmatic persona. What is your favourite Prince album?

Sad. His music was most of the time great, and made not so bad movies. Under the Cherry Moon was great. Sad Year.
