Back in 2010, New Line announced that they were developing a live-action / CG animated hybrid movie based on the Looney Tunes character Speedy Gonzales. At the time, George Lopez was supposedly going to provide the voice but now six years later it appears that New Line’s parent company is going back to the drawing board with this project. The Fastest Mouse in all Mexico is still getting his own movie, but now it will be a fully animated feature with writer-director-actor Eugenio Derbez (Instructions Not Included) taking over the voice. Derbez had this to say about the announcement:
“In Mexico we grew up watching Speedy Gonzales. He was like a superhero to us, or maybe more like a revolutionario like Simon Bolivar or Pancho Villa. He watched out for the little people but with a lot of bravado and a weakness for the ladies. I’m really excited to be bringing this character to the big screen. And besides being Mexican— my full name is Eugenio Derbez Gonzalez and I have big ears. The casting couldn’t be better.”
The movie is tentatively titled Speedy and the script is being written by Hank Nelken (Are We Done Yet?, Saving Silverman). The plot is being loosely described as a “heist caper” and at the moment it is unclear if any other Looney Tunes characters will make an appearance. Obviously this character has a bit of a checkered past and is considered by some to be an offensive stereotype, but with Derbez’s clout in Mexico it sounds like they have found the right person to champion it. Are you interested in a Speedy Gonzales movie? Would you like to see any other Looney Tunes characters on the big screen?
