Although Zoe Saldana is best known for sci-fi blockbusters like Avatar, Star Trek and Guardians of the Galaxy, next month we will see her tackle a much more complex role as legendary jazz musician Nina Simone in the long-delayed biopic Nina. Unfortunately for her, the movie has become mired in controversy over the fact that Saldana wore make-up to match Simone’s darker skin tone, seen by many as being equivalent to blackface. There is also the issue that the project is unauthorized by Simone’s family and that Simone’s alleged relationship with her personal assistant Clifton Henderson (played by David Oyelowo) has been disputed. Either way, the release of the new trailer seems to have reignited the outrage and there isn’t a whole lot of goodwill out there for this movie at the moment. Written and directed by Cynthia Mort (The Brave One, Roseanne), Nina hits select theatres and VOD on April 22nd. Check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
