2016 Academy Award Winners

After cleaning up at the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday night, Tom McCarthy’s Spotlight surprised everyone by snagging Best Picture at the Academy Awards as well. Leo still managed to get his Oscar, however, and both Alejandro G. Innaritu and Emmanuel Lubezki were repeat winners. Other major upsets included Mark Rylance stealing Stallone’s Best Supporting Actor award and Ex Machina getting an unexpected win for Best Visual Effects. Mad Max: Fury Road still managed to bring home the most awards with a total of six, and in between, Chris Rock continued to take aim at Hollywood’s lack of diversity.     Spotlight got Best Pic. and Best original screenplay, i doubt that anybody in 5
    year will remember it. Star Wars got no best Picture Oscar in 1978, and 5
    years later who cares who won best picture in 1978 or 2016.

    And the force was not strong enough, got no Oscar. At least Mr. Lucas will be
    happy. So Avatar still holds the Fort for overall success at the Box-office
    and overall reputation.

    No real complaints other than for Supporting Actor.
    Haven’t seen Danish Girl, but I didn’t care greatly for anyone else on Supporting Actress, so that’s probably right.
    Bummer Carol didn’t get shit, but I don’t really disagree with the stuff that beat it out in what it was nominated for, but It should definitely have been in there for Best Picture.

    e: After listening to Anohni’s song, fuck Specter’s. It WOULD have been awesome to see her sing up there. Especially now I’ve just found out about the identifying as a woman thing.

    Really? The fact that you say that the Hateful Eight score is crappy already means I probably shouldn’t even comment, but whatever. John Williams already won for the original Star Wars score…and while The Force Awakens was a very good score as well it makes since that he wouldn’t win for it considering the use of so many themes from the original. Yes yes, Rey’s Theme is amazing but overall the score’s similar feeling to the original pretty much sealed the deal that it wouldn’t win. The Hateful Eight score is amazing and deserved the Oscar, so you’ll most definitely get no complaints from me.

    The black actors crying for diversity are just annoying me now. It’s clear they don’t care about actual diversity. They don’t give a shit about Hispanic or Latino or Asian Americans or any other minority. If they did they would have gone to bat for them last night. But no, they only care about black people and they are only trying to make it into a white vs black issue. There’s only one group of people perpetuating a racial divide here and it ain’t the Academy voters. MLK would be rolling in his grave thinking this crap was still going on fifty years after his death.

    Rather than a genuine call for diversity in the end it just came off as “You didn’t vote for any black people so now we’re going to spoil the party.”

    lol, Force Awakens score sucked. Williams weakest of the 7 movies and pretty much 0 memorable themes. Morricone wins this by a landslide

    The fact that there was all this talk about embracing diversity and no one acknowledged that two of the song nominee performers, transgender singer Anohni and Korean soprano Sumi Jo,were not invited to perform due to “time constraints” was lame. Obviously, they were deemed not famous enough to perform their nominated songs, even if that was a prime opportunity to display some diversity.

    Morricone did win that Oscar not for the H8ful8 score but for his amazing body of work. I am totally fine with that.

    I agree it was the “worst” of the series of greatest music ever made for the history of movies. The stuff from Hateful 8 was OK, but not even in the same ballpark as Williams.

    All argue that. Sure, there was a lot of re-hash in TFA, but Rays theme was great as was the Kylo Ren theme, which was also amazeballs, and both of them were 10 times better than the OK Hateful 8 theme, which was one note, no variation.

  • Spotlight winning Best Picture is why the Oscars make no sense to me. I have always assumed that best picture meant best production, from script, to pre-production, to filming, to editing, to final movie as a whole. Now, I didn’t expect Mad Max to win Best Picture but when it takes home 6 Oscars for elements that clearly covered all bases from pre to post production shouldn’t a film like that pretty much be an obvious choice for Best Picture?

    I’m sure Spotlight is a great film, but to only win best Original Screenplay (even though it’s based on true events, I wish Oscar could explain that one) and then be given Best Picture, when it lost on Editing, lost on Director, lost on both Acting awards.

    The Revenant & Mad Max were nominated for 9 non-acting awards and Spotlight was nominated for 3 (not including Best Picture for either)… Just from that which would you assume were the better production?

    Something can be technically proficient but not be the overall “best” film. Especially if you look at the categories Mad Max won. Obviously, Spotlight won’t win Best Visual Effects or Best Costume Design.

    I’m not sure what’s that hard to grasp. It won Best Screenplay which story played a big part in what appealed to the voters I’m sure.

    I liked Mad Max more than Spotlight, but I don’t think winning a bunch of technical awards should mean Best Picture by default.

    Also, the way the voting works for Best Picture is a weighted scale of ranking each nominee #1-8. It could be that The Revenant had the most 1st place votes, but if Spotlight was every voter’s 2nd favorite movie, that could have given it the win.

    Not in the same ballpark? What the hell are you talking about? Excactly what original score in The Force Awakens was it that was so good? I certainly didn’t find it memorable. Morricone is probably the best film composer of all time (certainly better than Williams), and he proved that this year.

  • The Hateful 8 score was the best part of the movie, and as mentioned above it was also a lifetime achievement award. John Williams has plenty of statues and as much as I liked the Ep7 score a lot of it was already written from prior films.

  • I’m excited to see Spotlight, I’m not knocking it for winning, more a head-scratcher when it comes to the Oscars… I usually wait to see dramas at home as rentals but I’ll try to catch this now before it leaves theaters.

    I actually figured Spotlight & The Big Short would split the vote of those who lean towards dramas, leaving the Revenant with an easy win, but maybe Revenant & Mad Max split the vote a bit too and as Sam said, Spotlight could have won by being consistently higher in the voting.

    Annie is one
    of WA great movie, but not the most creative movie of the year. Same with
    Citizen Kane and Vertigo, who also got forgotten at the Oscar. Not to mention
    1941. Spotlight is a very good movie,
    but not close to mad max in the field of creativity. The Oscar Committee seems
    to be in favour of directors of “safe” conventional movies. Hitchcock never got
    a regular Oscar, which shows that the Oscar Committee not always …is quite
    right. Lifeboat and Psycho were unconventional. And who remembers the 1945 Winner
    “Going my Way”? I admit that he lost to directs
    like Wilder, Zinneman and Kazan, who all were brilliant directors.

    Not surprised by SPOTLIGHT taking home best pic, but I’m also pretty confident this will be one of the many best pic wins that gets forgotten in 5 years. Remember King’s Speech?

    No doubt. The film had a strong made-for-television vibe (not unlike Crash). Generally, though, a film is not remembered or hailed in light of the awards it receives (or nominated for), I don’t think. Nominations and awards–and the ceremony, most especially–are a masturbatory endevour anyhow, and making attempts to apply reason to the outcome of these convoluted processes is part and parcel of the tradition.
