Michael Bay Might Return for Transformers 5, Animated Prequel Also in the Works

Michael Bay has been saying for many years now that he wants to step away from the Transformers franchise and let someone else take over, but somehow he never seems to follow through on that promise. Last we heard, Transformers: Age of Extinction would soft reboot the series and leave it ready to hand off to a newcomer, but now this week we are hearing that Bay could very well end up returning for a fifth film. This wouldn’t be the only new Transformers movie on the horizon, however, as Paramount is moving forward with plans for a handful of spin-offs that would potentially help build their own so-called “Transformers Cinematic Universe.” Hit the jump to find out what we know.

According to Deadline, Paramount now has a potential roadmap for the future of the Transformers franchise, thanks to contributions from a huge team of writers that included the following scribes:

  • Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead)
  • Art Marcum & Matt Holloway (Iron Man)
  • Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand)
  • Andrew Barrer & Gabriel Ferrari (Ant-Man)
  • Ken Nolan (Black Hawk Down)
  • Christina Hodson (The Fugitive reboot)
  • Lindsey Beer (Short Circuit reboot)
  • Jeff Pinkner (Fringe)
  • Steven DeKnight (Daredevil, Spartacus)
  • Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Hibernation)

Akiva Goldsman (I Am Legend, I, Robot) was the one overseeing the whole process and he will now reportedly begin work on a script for Transformers 5 with Mark Wahlberg attached to return as Cade Yeager. Their plan seems similar to how Disney is handling Star Wars with one continuing storyline creating the backbone of the franchise while other spin-offs alternate in between. Transformers 5 will supposedly be followed by an animated origin story focusing on Cybertron with Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari (Ant-Man) writing the script.

As for whether Michael Bay will direct Transformers 5, it certainly seems like a strong possibility. He recently tweeted that he has not committed to anything yet and that he is currently having discussions with Steven Spielberg. Either way, they are saying that this will actually be the last one that he directs. Sure it will. Are you looking forward to one more Transformers movie from Michael Bay?
