Ever since he first pulled out his so-called “broadsaber” in the first teaser trailer, fans have been dying to know more about the primary villain in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It was already revealed that his name is Kylo Ren and he is played by Adam Driver but now this month J.J. Abrams is finally starting to drip feed some additional information about the character. In particular, this week he has finally explained why the character does not bear the title “Darth”, and it’s really quite simple… he’s not a Sith. Here’s what Abrams had to say about it in this month’s issue of Empire Magazine:
“Kylo Ren is not a Sith. He works under Supreme Leader Snoke [played by Andy Serkis], who is a powerful figure on the Dark Side Of The Force.”
This follows up on statements he made in EW a couple of weeks ago, where he explained that Kylo Ren is part of a mysterious group called the Knights of Ren. He also seems to be simply a fan of Darth Vader as opposed to an underling, having fashioned his own mask as an homage to Vader’s.
Abrams also talks about how The First Order are not an Imperial off-shoot but rather a group that admired the Empire. This is all apparently based on conversations they had about “what would have happened if the Nazis all went to Argentina but then started working together again.” The new issue of Empire goes on sale starting tomorrow. Check out both covers below along with the brand new photo of Kylo Ren.
