Film Junk Premium Podcast #36: ’80s Toy Franchise Films

80stoypremium

One shall stand and one shall fall on this month’s premium podcast as we take another nostalgic trip down memory lane to revisit a handful of films based on ’80s toys and cartoons. Things get heated when we take sides in an age old debate between the animated features Transformers: The Movie and G.I. Joe: The Movie and then we explore the darker side of kids movies gone wrong with the live-action Masters of the Universe and The Garbage Pail Kids Movie. Together we work through our issues with the traumatic deaths of beloved characters and the uncomfortable sexual undertones in The Garbage Pail Kids Movie. Is He-Man the role that Dolph Lundgren was born to play? Why is there only one female Transformer and how do they reproduce? Can any of these movies actually be appreciated in a non-ironic way? Dare to be stupid and grab this month’s premium podcast below.

Very cool that you guys got this out as quick as you did. I regrettably remember next to nothing of Transformers from watching it as a kid. However I have very fond memories of watching Masters of the Universe and Garbage Pail Kids. I used to and still think that the synthe—err Cosmic Key was the coolest gizmo in the MOTU world and was bummed to discover that a sequel would not be made…haha oh brother!

  • milan

amazing premium, was worried that it might be bit short coz you are discussing only 4 movies, but the depth you go into is great! dax and his first time seeing transformers story had me rolling on floor… you guys are the best!

  • iammattz

These 80’s premiums are the greatest, keep it up guys.

  • ECONOMYpolitica

I’m with the Greg usurper on this one. Thundercats all the way.

  • Sam

Just to make everything uncomfortable, Tangerine was apparently 15 years old in GPK. I can’t deny catching that same scene Frank replayed. Hard to believe she is basically the same age as Dodger at the time who was 14.

  • Colin

Absolutely loving Dax on this show, dude is killing it with his passion for 80s cartoons. The story about trying to hold it together while watching the Transformers get slaughtered was heartbreaking. Gotta give it up to Frank for the quick forums research, too… Your sourcing of nerd anecdotal evidence as fact had me in stitches. Gonna love hearing what Australian listeners feel about your opinion of their country/history.

  • Tommy

This was a beautiful thing, boys. Thank you very much.

  • CyEd

that Transformers blu ray is my white whale

  • pcch7

Quick? Lol, this is the january premium if I’m not mistaken haha. I don’t want to make it seem like I’m complaining though, I’m not. I’ll take my Filmjunk whenever I can get it, the guys are doing a great job.

  • pcch7

I agree with Sean, M.A.S.K was my favorite show too but I guess maybe it was more popular here in Europe. After M.A.S.K there was Transformers, we didn’t have G.I Joe here.

  • pcch7

As for the “so say we all”, the first time it appeared in Battlestar Galactica, it was ad-libbed by Edward James Olmos. So I guess it depends on whether he had seen G.I. Joe or not

Second the appreciation for the 80s-themed premiums.

Can anyone tell me why I remember a very thorough discussion of Masters of the Universe on a previous podcast?

  • Dooobie

Great, guys! Thanks! Speaking of nostalgia: What about a premium on 80s Amblin films? E.T., Gremlins, Goonies, Harry and the Hendersons, Innerspace – a lot good stuff to choose from.

  • Dooobie

Hmmm.. all I can think of is that in the 80’s Fantasy Premium they speak about NOT talking about MotU….

  • SLOTH

Dax was on fire in this premium! he was so hilarious. Amazing podcast guys!

  • Sam

Indeed. I normally would dread a Michael Bay Transformers premium, but I’d imagine it would be a fun one if they got Dax on board for it with his passion for the series and franchise.

Actually, in order to keep the heated Transformers vs. G.I. Joe debate up, I nominate a future Transformers/G.I. Joe premium, covering the 4 Michael Bay movies, and the two new G.I. Joe movies on the same premium.

  • Love the heated g.i. joe vs transformers discussion! :)

  • Btw, what do you think about my (blindbought) transformers dvd case

    http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/attach/1/40597466465dc511e8_0.jpg

it is basically a metal case which just has a normal dvd case inside it. This make it extra large so it really sticks out on my shelf. It is really weird.

  • pcch7

I don’t think you guys mentioned the coronation scene in Transformers did you? When Starscream is getting the crown and there’s a bunch of transformers playing trumpets lol

  • Sean

Ugh, I have the first two seasons of Voltron in tins like this and they drive me nuts.

  • Derek

Good thing I saw this posting before attempting to post a screen grab of this scene… I think we all need to go take a cold shower and examine some life choices.

  • Derek

Still laughing at Jay’s “Shut up, Sean. You gotta shut up right now.”
