Film Junk Premium Podcast #34: Kevin Smith

kevinsmithpremium

With Kevin Smith releasing his eleventh film this year just as Clerks its celebrating its 20th Anniversary, we thought it was a perfect time to return to the place where his filmmaking career all started: the Quick Stop. For this month’s premium podcast, we revisited all of Kevin Smith’s View Askewniverse films, allowing the unlikely characters of Jay and Silent Bob to act as our guide through this nostalgic journey. From the gritty authenticity of Clerks and the broad teen angst of Mallrats to the controversial religious fantasy Dogma and the attempted return to his indie roots with Clerks II, it is an interesting albeit inconsistent line-up. So have these movies aged well or are they now just painfully dated? Does Chasing Amy break down gender barriers or is it a juvenile male fantasy? Are pop culture references Kevin Smith’s biggest strength or greatest weakness? Make like a circus seal and download this month’s premium podcast below.

I appreciate all the hard work you guys do so much, that I’m going to buy this premium, BUT I really don’t like Kevin Smith. AAAAAArrrrrrgggghhhhhh!

  • Sam

Thanks on the premium. Was great once again and found myself having a lot of Frank-like storylines .

Bottom 5 material for me would be Chris Rock in J&SSB. He’s brutal and ridiculously obnoxious. Also, similar to the throwaway pretzel line callback, in the same movie, random customer asking Dante “are you even supposed to be here today?” Really didn’t enjoy J&SSB this time around.

  • Sean

Thanks Lori. Hope you enjoy it anyway!

  • devolutionary

Yeah, there’s way too much pandering in that movie. It’s the culmination of all the fanboyism that ran rampant and unchecked from all the previous J&SB films. On rewatch, the one that took the largest tumble down for me was Mallrats though. It felt shallow even for its time (and demographic).

  • Sam

“Ali Farter” alone is worth the cost of this premium

  • Stinker

Great as always……and Kevin smith is ok, but where is the Clint Eastwood meets Harry or the John Duke Wayne special? The past offers art, the present Kevin Smith. And the Future…….please no Bay…..please go away

  • Indianamcclain

If this does go over well please do the Austin powers trilogy.

  • schizopolis

Another top notch premium. You’ve compelled me to rewatch Dogma. Only saw it the one time in theaters. I remember kind of hating it and thinking it was over-written and tonally everywhere. Might even revisit Clerks. Haven’t seen it in maybe a decade.

  • Mrespony

    No.

  • Tim

Whatever happened to the firmly promised and highly anticipated Alien Abduction Premium?

  • Kenneth Serenyi

This Premium continues one of Jay’s narratives of favoring the third film in a franchise/trilogy. Superman 3, Exorcist 3, Star Trek IV (the 3rd movie in the Star Trek 2,3.4 trilogy.) Sure, this one is a bigger stretch, but you could label Dogma as the 3rd Studio film or 3rd non-Clerks film in that universe.

  • Kenneth Serenyi

Since you’ve already featured 2 of the 3 movies in the “Clever Girl” trilogy – Total Recall and Jurassic Park – you could put the 3rd film – Contact – in an “Alien Signals” Premium with movies like Close Encounters and The Arrival.

  • Colin

How appropriate that the first Comedy premium is also one of the funniest… this whole “narrative” plotline on FJ has really blossomed into one of your best. Slightly disappointed that everyone – especially Frank – failed to revisit, or even address, Clerks: The Animated Series; it’s truly a bizarre footnote in the Kevin Smith/Askewniverse tale.

Also, where is our 90s Video Game Adaptation (w/ bonus The Wizard discussion) premium? I know Jay is going to hate every second of it, but then again Frank was a trooper through lots and lots of horror…

  • Sean

Video Game premium is still in the works, it came up recently. Just trying to find the right time to record it.

  • Deven Science

Crap, I don’t remember hearing that. Sounds like something Jay would say.

  • Sam

It was actually Sean, in his bottom 5.

  • Kasper

Dogma is still the only good movie Kevin Smith has ever made. Pleasently surprised you guys liked it!

  • Kenneth Serenyi

And how could I forget Halloween 3

  • Kevin

I’m a little late, but I just wanted to say thanks for this, this is my first premium podcast. Keep up the awesome work!
