Benedict Cumberbatch Now in Talks to Play Doctor Strange

Alright, let’s try this again. It looks like Marvel has finally found their Doctor Strange… for real this time. Over the past few months, we kept hearing that Joaquin Phoenix was still their top choice for the lead role in the upcoming film and that negotiations were ongoing. Alas, he appeared to drop out for good a few weeks ago after reaching an impasse over the number of films he would appear in. Marvel turned back to several of the other candidates that they had in mind and now they are reportedly close to locking down Benedict Cumberbatch instead. If all goes according to plan, he will be Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme.

According to Variety, Benedict Cumberbatch is currently in talks to star in Marvel’s Doctor Strange. Cumberbatch was one of the first names rumoured for the role (along with Tom Hardy) once Marvel had hired a director. His deal is said to be dependent on scheduling and, in particular, shooting for the next season of Sherlock.

In a lot of ways, Benedict Cumberbatch is a safer choice for Marvel and probably one that will appeal more to a mainstream audience. Cumberbatch has been verge of becoming a major Hollywood star for a while now, and although he played the villain in Star Trek Into Darkness and voiced Smaug in The Hobbit movies, this will be his first time actually headlining a major blockbuster. Doctor Strange is currently slated for release on July 8, 2016 and will be directed by Scott Derrickson. Do you think Marvel made the right choice?

Safe but boring, not saying he isnt a fine actor but I’d prefer someone a bit more offbeat. Remember RDJ was considered a bit of a wildcard before Iron Man but did a great job.

You know I wouldn’t say he’s safe…he definitely gave Sherlock a very modern offbeat character spin that put him on the star map. In fact he was a virtual unknown before he put Sherlock back into the modern vernacular again.

He’s got the chops for sure and his ability to transform into characters while still retaining that Cumberbatch identity is rather similar to what RDJ does.

Hardy, Phoenix, they’re all great but CumberBatch is I think really ideally suited for Strange. If this goes through I will most definitely be looking forward to the new Dr Strange movie!

Safe in that he is just one of those go to guys for every blockbuster going.
Willem Defoe or Alan Rickman back in the day but thats me being safe and predictable I suppose.
