With Divergent hitting theatres this weekend, 20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for a movie that they hope will kick off their own blockbuster young adult franchise. At this point, the number of young adult book series waiting to be adapted seems virtually limitless, but recent flops like The Host and The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones have proven that success is not a foregone conclusion. The premise of The Maze Runner seems intriguing, but will it break through without the help of any major stars or an established director?
Much like The Hunger Games and Divergent, the story takes place in a post-apocalyptic dystopian future where a group of teenage boys find themselves transported to a mysterious location with their memories erased. Their only hope of escape is to navigate a giant maze that is inhabited by terrifying creatures known as Grievers. Dylan O’Brien (Teen Wolf) stars along with Will Poulter (Son of Rambow, We’re the Millers), Kaya Scodelario (Skins) and Patricia Clarkson. The Maze Runner hits theatres on Sept. 19th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
