Last week we heard reports that J.J. Abrams and Disney were finally closing in on an actor for the lead role in Star Wars: Episode VII. There were five names on the shortlist, all of them male, some of them unknown, but there still seemed to be some internal debate over the desired ethnicity of the role. Now this week we have another up-and-coming actress being rumoured for a major role in the film as well. Word on the street is that 12 Years a Slave actress Lupita Nyong’o has met with J.J. Abrams and is close to signing on to the highly anticipated sequel. Considering her recent Oscar win, it’s easy to see why they’d want her on board… the question is, what character would she be playing?
According to THR, Lupita Nyong’o met with J.J. Abrams just a few weeks ago about potentially taking on the female lead in Star Wars: Episode VII. The news was originally reported by Latino Review, who hinted that she might be playing a Sith. On the other hand, the two lead roles are said to be a male and female in their twenties, although Nyong’o is now 31.
There is also a mysterious non-Caucasian character in the mix, said to be a descendent of Obi-Wan Kenobi. This seems like a less likely possibility, but clearly it backs up reports that they are looking to diversify the cast. Either way, it would be nice to see Nyong’o given a few more lines than she had in Non-Stop. Would you like to see Lupita Nyong’o cast in Star Wars: Episode VII?
