Australian director David Michôd burst onto the scene in 2010 with his directorial debut Animal Kingdom, loosely based on the true story of a ruthless family of criminals operating out of Melbourne. The movie earned Jacki Weaver an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress and it made numerous “best of” lists from film critics that year. Now Michôd is back with his follow-up film, The Rover, this time set in the Australian outback and this time entirely fictional.
The movie stars Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson and it appears to be set in some sort of dystopian future, although the details of that are yet to be revealed. The plot synopsis says only that it takes place “10 years following the collapse of society” and that it focuses on a man who “will go to any lengths to take back the one thing that still matters to him.” The Rover will hit theatres sometime in 2014; check out the first trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.
