Vin Diesel Hints at a New xXx Sequel

There once was a time when Vin Diesel turned up his nose at the idea of sequels, but over the past decade, he has come to appreciate (along with everyone else in Hollywood) the overwhelming power of a franchise. Sequels are no longer regarded as shameful, inferior products, and as Vin Diesel proved with his return to the Fast & Furious series, a loyal fan base can be worth its weight in gold. In September, he will be bringing out the third installment in the Riddick series, but after that, it would seem that he is interested in reviving yet another early 2000s action franchise. Indeed, rumours of Xander Cage’s death may have been greatly exaggerated. Are you ready for xXx 3?

This week on Facebook, Vin Diesel posted the following image:

Clearly not the best Photoshop job in the world, but the message is clear: Vin Diesel wants to do a sequel to the 2002 film xXx, reprising his role as extreme sports athlete turned secret agent Xander Cage. You may recall that back in 2005, Sony released a sequel called xXx: State of the Union starring Ice Cube as a different secret agent named Darius Stone. Diesel’s character was supposedly killed off in a short film included on the DVD, providing an explanation as to why he didn’t appear in the film.

This isn’t the first we’ve heard of a possible xXx sequel, however. Five years ago, both Diesel and director Rob Cohen had signed on for xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. Cohen eventually dropped out and Ericson Core (Invincible) took his place, then the project quietly faded away. Does this mean that the movie is finally getting greenlit? Obviously Vin Diesel seems to have regained his box office clout, but I’m not sure that this franchise is the best way to use it. What do you think, would you be interested in seeing a xXx sequel?
