With the San Diego Comic-Con now just days away, it’s time to prepare ourselves for another barrage of announcements related to upcoming comic book movies (even more than usual, that is). 20th Century Fox decided to get a head start on the proceedings by dropping some big news over the weekend. Speculation had already started spreading across the blogosphere last week when some people noticed that Fox had registered the domain name X-ForceMovie.com. They have since come out and confirmed that they are indeed developing an X-Force movie and they already have a screenwriter and a potential director lined up. Is Fox finally starting to follow in Marvel’s footsteps and expand beyond just the core X-Men characters?

According to THR, Jeff Wadlow will write and possibly direct the X-Force movie for 20th Century Fox with Lauren Shuler Donner on board as producer. Wadlow directed the upcoming Kick-Ass 2, but he also previously did the MMA flick Never Back Down and the horror movie Cry_Wolf. Fox recruited Matthew Vaughn for X-Men: First Class following the success of the original Kick-Ass, and it would appear that they see the same potential in Wadlow.

X-Force is an X-Men spin-off that was created by Rob Liefeld in the early ’90s, essentially morphing out of the New Mutants. They were a darker and more aggressive team, led by Cable, the son of Cyclops, who was sent to the future and eventually returned to the present to try and defeat Apocalypse. It is unclear if this would somehow be a direct follow-up to X-Men: Days of Future Past, but it might make sense given the rumoured involvement of Apocalypse. Either way, Rob Liefeld has always been a polarizing figure in the comics industry so it will be interesting to see how this movie is received. Are you looking forward to an X-Force movie?
