Although The Expendables and The Expendables 2 marked the first time that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone had appeared together in a feature film, Arnold’s screen time was fairly limited and the line-up was already pretty crowded. Escape Plan (formerly known as The Tomb) is a slightly different beast in that it is the first time that these two icons will co-headline a film together without a self-aware army of aging action stars surrounding them. That’s not to say there isn’t a decent supporting cast here, however, as the movie also co-stars Jim Caviezel, Vincent D’Onofrio, Sam Neill, Amy Ryan, Vinnie Jones and 50 Cent.
Directed by Mikael Hafstrom (1408, The Rite), the movie finds Stallone playing a security expert who is set up and thrown behind bars in a high-tech prison of his own design. He must team up with another convict (Schwarzenegger) to try and escape and seek revenge on those who put him there. While the premise does sound appealing to me, the first trailer comes across as a bit of a mess. Thrillers like this usually require a semi-decent script and something tells me this doesn’t have one. Escape Plan hits theatres on Oct. 18th; check out the trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.
