Although most would probably consider Spring Breakers to be Harmony Korine’s most accessible movie to date, that doesn’t mean that it’s not a challenging film in its own right. Mainstream audiences clearly didn’t quite know what to make of it, many taking to social media after seeing it back in March and essentially calling it the “worst movie ever”. Now Harmony Korine is planning on making it even more challenging by taking the music concept of a remix and applying it to the film. We’ve seen plenty of director’s cuts and extended cuts before, but has a movie ever had a full blown “remix” cut just for the hell of it? Here’s what he had to say about it:
“I had this idea… With music remixes sometimes, when certain producers take a song and chop them up and deconstruct them – why not try that with a feature film? Using all different footage, making the same film all over again… Let’s just say for right now there’ll be a whole alternate film at some point. Maybe on the DVD, maybe on iTunes.”
Considering that the DVD and Blu-ray will be hitting stores in just a couple of weeks, the former doesn’t seem likely. Sadly, there is no mention of an alternate cut listed in the specs for the upcoming release.
Still, the idea is definitely an intriguing one and Korine also mentioned that he is collaborating with some other people on said remix. Would you be interested in seeing a “chopped and screwed” version of Spring Breakers? Do you think this is something that other filmmakers should consider with their own movies?
