Film Junk Poll: What is the Best Movie of 2013 So Far?

Update: Due to popular demand, I created a new poll that includes The Place Beyond the Pines. So go ahead and revote!

We’ve just about reached the halfway point of 2013, which of course means that it’s time for a midterm evaluation of this year’s cinematic offerings. Since a lot of the Oscar-calibre films tend to come later in the year, this is a particularly good chance to highlight some of the noteworthy genre flicks and interesting indies that might end up getting overshadowed by the time December rolls around. But that’s not to say that a few summer blockbusters shouldn’t enter into the discussion as well. My general feeling is that there haven’t been a ton of stand out films so far, but perhaps some of you will disagree. What do you think is the best movie of 2013 so far? Cast your vote in this week’s poll and feel free to discuss your personal favourites via the comments below.

    The Place Beyond the Pines?

  • Sean

Yeah, it probably should have been on the list even though I didn’t like it as much as everyone else seems to. I was largely consulting the Rotten Tomatoes Best of 2013 list, and for some reason The Place Beyond the Pines is listed as a 2012 film on that site.

Shame on you Sean, even though you didn’t like The Place Beyond the Pines, we did. Anyway, had to pick #2 from the list – Side Effects.

  • Dan Bremner

Isn’t Spring Breakers a 2012 film too? It is according to IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes?

  • Sean

It all depends on if you want to go by a film festival premiere date (which IMDb usually does) or the U.S. theatrical release date. Most people go by the latter.

RT does have Spring Breakers listed under 2013 though… go figure. I’m not saying I left off The Place Beyond the Pines because I didn’t think it should qualify, I just didn’t see it on the RT list, so I kinda forgot about it.

Well why can’t you put it in now? Everyone that’s asking for it can change their vote when you do it.

Looking at the films that are listed, it is pretty clear that TPBTP is the obvious choice (with Upstream Color being the only real competition). The fact that films like Evil Dead, Fast & Furious, Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel make the list is just outright stupid.

You can’t edit the poll once it’s created

Alright, since you guys love it so much, I have created a new poll. Vote away.

  • For me, it’s Before Midnight, and it’s not close. The film is perfect, and if you liked the first two, I think you’ll agree that lightning struck three times.

  • Indianamcclain

For the most part its been a pathetic year.

  • piggystardust

Spring Breakers is my cool pick and also my honest pick. I remember the credits rolling and just sitting dumbstruck in my seat until Ellie Goulding’s “Lights” finished playing.

loved this post sean i was just trying to figure out my top 5 of the year so far.

  • randy_butternubs

Not Stoker, that’s for damn sure.

  • Jonnie123

Not enough people have seen Mud obviously!

  • Sam

Way more people need to see Mud. This poll is proof of that.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS!! Anything else is the choice of a snob, or just a plain idiot!

  • Owozifa

I feel bad even answering this poll since I haven’t gotten to see anything but blockbusters. Spring Breakers played for only one week here and I missed it, and pretty much nothing else was even available to watch. I haven’t seen a movie I loved so far this year. Iron Man 3, I guess is the best. Feels kinda sad.

Best and favorite are two different things.
