It’s been a four years now since the release of Terminator Salvation and two years since the franchise was acquired by Annapurna Pictures. At the time, no one knew if producer Megan Ellison was planning to continue the story or if she would reboot the franchise in some way. While we still don’t know exactly what the next Terminator movie will be about, we do know that it will be distributed by Paramount, who apparently worked out a deal with Ellison and her brother David earlier this week. Now Arnold Schwarzenegger has come forward to offer a comment that confirms his involvement, although the specifics have yet to be revealed.
The good folks over at TheArnoldFans.com were apparently able to track down Arnold in Australia, where he is a guest speaker at 21st Century Financial Education Summit. Here’s what he had to say:
“I’m very happy that the studios want me to be in Terminator 5 and to star AS the Terminator, which we start shooting in January and I’m also going to do King Conan – to play that role and also to do another Twins movie. So I feel very proud of that. I feel very happy and I’m looking forward to doing those films.”
This would seem to put the kibosh on rumours that Arnold might be forced to play a human character due to his age. It also indicates that they will have to get things in motion fairly soon if they want to start shooting in January. We know that Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island) and Patrick Lussier (Drive Angry) were hired to write the script earlier this year, but we still have no word on a potential director.
Justin Lin was once rumoured to be attached but had to drop out due to his commitment to Fast & Furious 6. Could he be back in contention now that he has walked away from part 7? Either way, they’ll have their work cut out for them as the franchise seems to be on shaky ground after the mixed reception given to the last two installments. Do you have high hopes for Terminator 5?
