One of the more unpredictable action movies hitting theatres this summer is Universal’s R.I.P.D. Based on a Dark Horse comic book, the movie stars Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds as a pair of police officers who are killed in action, only to be recruited into a different type of police department in the afterlife. It’s hard not to be reminded of Men in Black as they hunt down supernatural baddies masquerading as normal human beings, but I’m not sure that Bridges and Reynolds have the chemistry needed to pull it off.
The first trailer has arrived online this week and it is a little underwhelming if you ask me. In particular, Jeff Bridges’ performance seems way over the top and the comedy in general seems pretty weak. Reynolds is still trying to shake off the failure of Green Lantern and I honestly think this could go either way. The movie is directed by Robert Schwentke (Red) and incidentally it will be opening against Red 2 which could very easily destroy its box office chances. R.I.P.D. hits theatres on July 19th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
