When the prospect of a Vacation reboot first surfaced a few years ago and it became clear that the story would center on Rusty, a lot of people assumed that Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo would still be involved as a way to “pass the torch” to the new Griswold family. Then Chevy Chase started playing hard to get and saying in interviews that he and D’Angelo were writing their own Vacation sequel and pitching it to Warner Brothers instead. With Ed Helms and Christina Applegate now officially attached to the reboot, I think it’s pretty clear that this thing has some serious momentum behind it and they can either get on board or get out of the way. Not surprisingly, Chase and D’Angelo have opted for the former.
According to Variety, Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo are in early talks to reprise their roles as Clark and Ellen Griswold in the Vacation reboot. The story revolves around Rusty (now played by Ed Helms) heading to Walley World with his wife (Christina Applegate) and their own kids. If negotiations work out, they will also apparently make a pit stop to visit the grandparents along the way.
It sounds like their appearances will be very brief (ie. “more on the cameo level”), which is probably to be expected. Still, it is a little surprising that Chase decided to swallow his pride and agree to such a minor role. There has also been talk of a Fletch remake for years and he has insisted that he will never agree to “pass the torch” to a younger star. Then again, Chase is reportedly leaving Community after this season even if it gets renewed (which it probably won’t) and doesn’t seem to have much else going on. Are you glad to have Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo given cameos in the Vacation reboot or would you have preferred to see them star in a sequel themselves?
