Room 237 Trailer: Unravelling Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining

Last year we were lucky enough to catch Rodney Ascher’s documentary Room 237 at TIFF and it led to some spirited discussion, not only about the quality of the doc itself, but also about the value of looking for hidden meanings in movies and whether or not it is possible to go too far. The movie is an examination of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining and the many underlying subtexts and possible easter eggs within the film. Even if you’re not a fan of The Shining there is a lot to dig into here.

IFC Midnight has released a new trailer for the movie this week and although it has an appropriately creepy atmosphere, it doesn’t do a very good job of getting across the experience of watching this movie. Much like the previously released teaser, it showcases quotes from critics rather than actual footage from the movie (which, to be fair, is mostly footage from The Shining anyway). Either way, it’s still worth a look. Room 237 hits select theaters and VOD on March 29th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

Trailer #2 is ridiculously good. Can’t wait for the blu-ray.

I revisited your review in the TIFF podcast. Having seen the film now I can appreciate some of the criticisms, but I wasn’t as bothered by them I guess. I really had fun with Room 237.
