The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Trailer

Now that The Twilight Saga has run its course, there are a handful of new movie franchises battling it out to try and capture the same young adult audience. The Hunger Games has already thrown down the gauntlet with a pretty massive debut earlier this year, but there is also Stephenie Meyer’s The Host, Divergent starring Shailene Woodley, and now this movie: The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. This particular movie stars Lily Collins as Clary Fray, a teenage girl who finds out that her mother was actually a demon hunter and that she was being sheltered from this secret world. She must learn to embrace her newfound powers and save her mother from the forces of evil.

Yeah, the premise sounds more than a little familiar, but I’m guessing that’s part of the draw. Jared Harris (Mad Men) also co-stars along with Lena Headey, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Kevin Durand, and it is directed by Harald Zwart (The Karate Kid, Agent Cody Banks). What do you think, does this have what it takes to be the next Twilight or Harry Potter? The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones hits theatres on Aug. 23rd; check out the first trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.

the premise is more than familiar, the books are based in a harry potter fanfic, cassandra clare’s pen name is cassie claire, and oh her heroine is clary with red hair oh snap

I simply adore Lily Collins and have seen every movie she ever played on and this one will be the next i’m going to see when it comes out.

Read the book. Did not like the main protagonist. All she does is cower, scream, and scream some more while others protect her all the time and fight for her. Even if you forgive her in the book, many will hate her in the movie.

    – (spoiler alert!) The Empire Strikes Back type reveal is kind of terrible and not suitable specially for a children’s movie. The Darth Vader who is not only her father but also the love of her life turns out to be her brother!!!!

    – Too much visual effects for its own good and the story world is not as detailed and coherent as Harry Potter or even Hunger Games.

    – The biggest problem is without doubt Budget of the movie. THE HOST, Divergent, WARM BODIES all seems relatively low budget movie whereas this has to be a bigger budget movie but the fanbase is way smaller than Hunger Games or Twilight .. So probably will fail at the box office..
