Although the first teaser trailer for Stephenie Meyer’s The Host was released back in March, it mostly consisted of photos of fans with a glowing effect added to their eyes. Now that the full theatrical trailer has arrived, it’s time to see if the latest movie from the creator of Twilight might appeal to anyone outside of the expected teenage girl demographic. Despite the fact that it is directed by Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, Lord of War), my initial impression is that it most definitely does not.
The movie takes place in a post-apocalyptic future where parasitic aliens known as Souls have merged with the majority of humans and taken over their minds. Saoirse Ronan plays Melanie Stryder, one of the last free humans on the planet, who is able to resist being infested partially due to her love for one of the other survivors. The premise seems more interesting than brooding vampires and werewolves, but it’s clear that the emphasis is still on romance. The Host hits theatres on March 29th; hit the jump to watch the full trailer now.
