It goes without saying that there’s a lot of money to be made from CG-animated family films nowadays, but as duds like Delgo have proven in the past, you still need some decent marketing muscle behind them to be successful. Hoodwinked! was The Weinstein Company’s first foray into animated territory, and it did okay for them; the sequel, not so much. Now they are going sci-fi with a movie called Escape from Planet Earth… no relation to John Carpenter’s long-rumoured Snake Plissken sequel Escape from Earth, unfortunately.
Brendan Fraser voices Scorch Supernova, a heroic alien astronaut that seems like a cross between Buzz Lightyear and Zapp Brannigan. When he encounters a distress signal from Earth, he finds himself stranded in a mysterious and dangerous world. Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Alba, Craig Robinson, Jane Lynch, James Gandolfini, Paul Reubens and Rob Corddry also co-star, but something tells me this could be another disappointment along the lines of Disney’s Mars Needs Moms. Escape from Planet Earth hits theatres on Feb. 14th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
