Great… yet ANOTHER exorcism flick (or at least, another movie about a possessed girl), this time being produced by Sam Raimi through his Ghost House Pictures imprint. Although I am always interested in seeing a new horror movie directed by Sam Raimi, his credits as a producer haven’t been particularly strong (The Grudge, The Messengers, Boogeyman). I will admit that this trailer actually looks better than I expected it to, but then again, a lot of people said the same thing about The Devil Inside as well.
Formerly going under the title Dibbuk Box, The Possession centers on Jeffrey Dean Morgan, the father of a young girl who finds an antique box at a yard sale. Little do they know, the box itself holds an evil spirit that casts a curse on the owner. The trailer claims it is “based on a true story”, but that might be a stretch; I think it is merely based on an old Jewish folktale (Dibbuks were also mentioned in the opening scene of The Coen Brothers’ A Serious Man). Surprisingly, it’s not a found footage film, and it actually looks like it has a bit of a budget behind it, which is somewhat refreshing. The Possession hits theatres on August 31st; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
