Watch the Opening Scene from Sacha Baron Cohen’s The Dictator

I don’t think I’m alone in feeling that the trailers for Sacha Baron Cohen’s upcoming movie The Dictator have been mostly unimpressive. The movie is his first scripted comedy and it seems to be relying a little too much on obvious and borderline racist humour, but as with a lot of these kinds of films, it’s impossible to judge it on the trailers alone. This week Paramount has released the opening scene from the movie and I think it shows traces of Cohen’s absurdist side, which makes me feel a little more optimistic.

They’ve also released another short clip featuring Anna Faris, who for once is not playing a dumb blonde but rather a feminist. Maybe this won’t be a disappointment after all! What do you think, do these scenes make you feel more confident in the movie? The Dictator hits theatres on May 16th; check out the clips after the jump and sound off in the comments below.
