Novelist Dennis Lehane’s books have a pretty great track record when being adapted into films. Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone, and Shutter Island each attracted major talent and generated enthusiasm from critics. Warner Bros. must think that caliber of production will continue with Lehane’s material since they just optioned his newest book, Live By Night. Some quality talent is already on board as Leonardo DiCaprio is set to star and produce with his Appian Way Productions. Live By Night isn’t even set to hit bookshelves until the fall, so details are scarce. However, we do know that it marks the second installment in an ongoing trilogy, which marks a departure for Lehane.
The books step away from his detective narratives and instead follows two families – one black, one white – through the turn of the twentieth century and the changes they face. Live By Night is said to cover the Prohibition era. While I’ve yet to actually read any of Lehane’s books, the films based on them have certainly motivated me to seek them out. This latest adaptation appears to be off to a solid start with DiCaprio in place. Based on his involvement, we’ll likely see a higher profile director step up to the plate too. But since no one else is involved at this point, there’s no telling when this film will even come close to starting production. Are you excited to hear about another Dennis Lehane adaptation in the works?
