If you haven’t been overly impressed with many of Oliver Stone’s films over the past decade or so, you’re in luck, because it looks like he’s finally getting away from the politics and going back to the ’90s with his next movie. Savages (not to be confused with the Laura Linney / Philip Seymour Hoffman film The Savages) is based on the novel by Don Winslow, about a pair of pot dealers who end up taking on the Mexican drug cartel when they refuse to cut them in on their high quality weed. The Mexicans kidnap their mutual girlfriend and demand a million dollar ransom, but Ben and Chon aren’t about to take it sitting down.
The movie stars Taylor Kitsch (John Carter), Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass) and Blake Lively (Green Lantern) in the lead roles, with Salma Hayek, Benicio del Toro, Emile Hirsch and John Travolta all making appearances as well. Although I tend to dismiss anything that even remotely feels like a Pulp Fiction knockoff nowadays, this looks like it could be a welcome return to form for Oliver Stone. I have a feeling it will also offer a refreshing change of pace from all the special effects extravaganzas coming out in the middle of the summer. Savages hits theatres on July 6th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
