Weekly Poll Results: Best David Cronenberg Movie

It’s time to tally up last week’s poll results, and according to Film Junk readers, The Fly is David Cronenberg’s best movie to date. The Jeff Goldblum remake had a decisive victory with over 28% of the votes, followed by a very tight race for second place between Videodrome, Eastern Promises and A History of Violence. The rest of the choices were all mostly ignored, with Dead Ringers just barely sneaking in to the #5 spot. I’m a little surprised that Eastern Promises and A History of Violence ranked so high, but I’m guessing that some moviegoers (younger ones in particular) may only be familiar with these two films. Do you agree with these results?

1. The Fly — 28.4%
2. Videodrome — 17.7%
3. Eastern Promises — 16%
4. A History of Violence — 15.4%
5. Dead Ringers — 5.9%
6. Crash — 4.8%
7. eXistenZ — 3.7%
8. Scanners — 3.4%
9. The Dead Zone — 2.5%
10. Naked Lunch — 2.2%

Fly and Videodrome are definitely very worthy titles of being considered his best, so no qualms with that. Dead Ringers is criminally underrated though, as Jeremy Irons really gives one of his best performances and probably should’ve won an Oscar. I still find Dead Zone endearing to watch even though it’s probably among his weakest directed films. Scanners was the first Cronenberg film I ever saw (before I was even aware of his style) and Naked Lunch is one crazy ride of a film. That “unfilmable” movie would’ve been a true mess without his hand. It would be nice to have seen more votes for some of his pre-Scanners films although I wouldn’t have expected it. The vision was there but the budgets were not.

I’m old and still view History of Violence and Eastern Promises as easily top 5 for him.

Last place for Naked Lunch? WTF ! Either none of my fellow voters has seen that movie or they all have terrible taste.

The Fly is still the scariest movie I’ve ever seen.

It’s difficult to vote for movies that haven’t been nominated.

Or they prefer one or more of Cronenberg’s many incredible films. I don’t think Naked Lunch would crack my top 5, and I love that movie. I bet if the poll was based on ranking his films in order of preference the final results would be quite different.

Yeah Wintle, I just re-checked the poll and forgot that they usually only have a limit of 10 for these polls. Nonetheless, I think some of those early films deserve to be on here above say eXistenZ or Dead Zone.

The readers nailed it this time as far as I’m concerned. The Fly definitely is his best film and Videodrome is his second best. Naked Lunch being at number 10 is a little dismaying even though I don’t personally love that film.
