Total Film Compiles the 50 Most Hated Films Ever Made

Here’s a subject that’s bound to put bees in a few people’s bonnets, particularly after the recent announcement of the Indiana Jones films coming to Blu-ray. The folks over at Total Film decided to put together a list of the 50 most hated films ever made, and guess what landed right at the top? That’s right, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull… with Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace coming in a close second.

It’s an interesting list with a lot of stinkers on it, but it’s still very different from a list of the worst movies ever made. It focuses primarily on movies that ruined a beloved character or property as opposed to movies that were just plain bad. However, it’s not just restricted to fanboy fare, as movies like Crash, Titanic and Forrest Gump also found their way on here. Do you agree with their choices? Check out the top 10 after the jump, or read the full article for more details.

10. Die Another Day
9. House of the Dead
8. Titanic
7. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
6. Batman and Robin
5. Psycho (1998)
4. Twilight
3. Forrest Gump
2. Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace
1. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Around the Web:

  • Curtis Williams

Forrest Gump definitely shouldn’t be on that list.

  • Goon

a LOT of movies on this list do not deserve the hate they receive.

  • kyri

pretend to thumb me up if you liked the fridge scene!

  • Theman

    Forrest Gump? Fuck this list….

  • rjdelight

Yeah, I don’t understand the Forrest Gump choice either. Not only do they put it on a list like this, but it’s third??? People hate Gump more than Batman & Robin??

House of the Dead and Transformers 2 are perhaps the only really bad movies on this list. (House of the Dead I only presume because I haven’t seen it, but come on… anyway, why is it more hated than other Uwe Boll movies? I thought they were all hated. By the way, House Of The Dead 2 is a pretty decent little movie).

Am I the only one that was entranced by the Psycho remake? I mean, it’s completely pointless, but it’s simply fascinating to watch. It’s a shot by freakin’ shot remake. I think it’s hated because it’s seen as vanity project of a famous art-house director. I don’t see anybody carping on Birds 2: Land’s End.

  • Indianamcclain

I liked Indiana Jones 4 and I think that movie is overrated in how much people dislike it, I think Transformers 2 should be number 1.

  • Goon

Twilight should be hated for it’s lak of quality.. but it’s on this list because of knuckleheaded dudes who in their jealous rage want to hate on the douchey stuff their girlfriend likes And most of these people haven’t even bothered to see it, even with Rifftrax. Ditto Sex and the City, the TV show AND the movie.

Makes me wish girls would invade message boards every time a superhero movie comes out and just rain on everyones parade, so we could get a taste of our own medicine.

  • Jsin

My top two hated: Jurassic park 2 and waterworld. Fucking environmentalist bullshit overhyped, overproduced pieces of shit with huge plot holes and shitty performances.

  • Anthony

Most of these movies deserve to be there.

Forrest Gump is a badass movie. I might put Apollo 13 on the list just for having to watch it like 20 times when I was in school. Teachers never wanted to teach anything but Ron Howard movies.

  • http://www.thebarbariancomic.blogspot.com Scott

Agreed that the SEX AND THE CITY movie was really bad. Trying to think of other movies I hate, but I really try hard to block that stuff out.

While “House of the Dead” is pretty awful, has it really been seen by enough people or done enough damage to anything to be TRULY hated? Many of the movies on the list had potential to be something good or really worth liking, whereas the only people that have seen “House of the Dead” are the people that put it on this list. “House of the Dead”, and Boll’s filmography as a whole, is just sort of there. I wouldn’t even know who the guy was if it wasn’t for the internet.

I think it’s fair to say that this list doesn’t represent mainstream audiences at all. Fuckin’ “Forrest Gump”? Really? Anyone notice that most of the movies on this list are from the last decade or so? The list shouldn’t be “The Most Hated Films Ever Made”, but rather “The Most Hated Films of the Internet Bitching Era”.

  • Napalm

Indy 4 really was bad though.

  • that motherfucker

    Dearest Total Film,

Put that shit on one page. Thanks.

  • DavidM

List of most clueless film magazines:
    1: Total Film

(Die Another Day is the most entertaining of Brosnan’s Bond movies, which I know isn’t saying much, but still. I agree it is more voiceiferously hated than the others though)

Forrest Gump isn’t hated anywhere near enough.

What is Forrest Gump doing on this list?? That doesn’t make any sense… Also Titanic seems weird – it is not a great movie for all intents or purposes but it neither ruines a beloved character nor a property… Weird…

  • Notthatjc

i think alot of the list are films that got too much hype. a lot of people are lamenting the list do to forest gump’s inclusion, but it does get alot of hate because so many people made it into the great film. when Forest Gump doesnt affect them,as well as the bar they placed, they add there anger of feeling let down unto how the felt of the film. so what would have fallen into the it was alright, became this movie what horrible. its the same reason movies like Machete, the Expendibles, Piranha 3D dont get much hate, they werent supposed to be great, so there is no let down

The list is personal opinion, come on Titanic and Forrest Gump? Both of those films are well liked by millions of people around the planet. The internet cinema blog sites, not so much.In the Gump case it is the perception that Zemeckis made a conservative film, because he shows the SDS members and the Black Panthers to be pains in the ass, when Hollywood has overall been kinder to these groups. The story is a good one,it is a fable of the boomer generation and should be seen as a tongue-in-cheek effort.Hollywood doesn’t like Titanic because it has been too successful. The wisdom is that for a movie to be seen as serious art then it needs to be less financially successful, like The Hurt Locker. THL was a box-office DOA domestically and it made even less money overseas. But… it had a female director and Hollywood wanted to do a good deed/publicity and so THL was pushed for best picture. Not because it was a movie favorite but because it served a couple of good purposes..for AMPAS.

I don’t Forrest Gump is a good choice.

I would add either Avatar or Halloween: Resurrection.

  • da master

im sorry but to everyone who agrees with this list, you fanboys/fangirls are the reason why society looks down on us and give us a bad name and image. you’re implying that you would rather watch the twilight saga and sex and the city than a star wars or indiana jones movie. i agree that episode 1 and crystal skull should appear on the list but taking the top 2 spots? STOP THINKING EVERY MOVIE SHOULD BE CATERED TO YOUR NEEDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • cwm

The top 3 seem perfect to me. Forrest Gump may not seem an obvious choice to everyone. However it features perhaps the most defining character created by an actor who’s renowned for being “well liked,” despite never–not once–having turned in a memorable performance, in any of his way-too-numerous roles.

It’s “heartwarming” in the nauseating manner, tugging at the heartstrings with trite elements such as portraying the mentally-challenged as mystically wise, and morally superior to the rest of us. Which is signified by heaping innumerable humiliations on another character. She seems to have been included in the story primarily to personify the screenwriter’s contempt for America’s social changes post-’60s. The likely permanence of this progress is despised by those who long for a “good old days” which never truly existed (except in ’50s sitcoms).

Forrest Gump belongs on this list. Definitely.

  • aggy

Sex and the city 2 got a 1 star rating by most newspapers. Another shit film is home alone 4 – the acting, script and jokes were awful.

  • [a] proxy

Are you getting Van Helsing should be #1 on this list and where’s The Mummy and G.I. Joe!?!? By the way, all three of these films were directed by the same director.

  • Unbelievable

Forrest Gump is worse than Twilight? Mr. Author, you’re clearly a delusional 14 year old girl
