Prometheus Viral Campaign Kicks Off with Fake TED Talk from Guy Pearce

Although I’m getting a little bit tired of exploring viral websites for fake corporations from upcoming movies, I have to admit that this is a pretty creative twist on a trend. As part of the marketing campaign for his upcoming film, Prometheus, Ridley Scott has given us a fake TED video from the future… from the year 2023 to be exact. In doing so, he also gives us a little bit of background on Peter Weyland, owner of Weyland Industries, a key character that helps connect Prometheus to Alien.

Played by Guy Pearce, Weyland is a controversial technology entrepreneur who is pushing the boundaries of biotech, genetic cloning and robotics, among other things. You may recall that a corporation named Weyland-Yutani sent the Nostromo in Alien; in Prometheus it is Peter Weyland who owns the ship Prometheus. Ridley Scott claims that is the only connection between the two movies, but I guess we’ll just have to wait to find out. The video was directed by Ridley’s son Luke Scott; check out the TED talk embedded after the jump, but also visit the official TED site since it’s all a part of the experience.

Around the Web:

  • so twitter and ties are still ness in 2023 – good to know

  • Nelson

Very excited for this movie. Would like to see a “full length” trailer or trailer # 2, as soon as possible.

  • Mike H

This is one movie I am looking forward to see this year!

  • Jonny Ashley

    yep, this is awesome.

  • I’m totally looking forward to this movie, yet I don’t really like this viral marketing thing. If they wanted it more realistic they would portray the man behind Waylend Corp (or whatever) not so much as a slimy scumbag (to the public)! Imagine if Steve jobs promoted Apple and said things like “I’m the God now” and such like? I’m all for the subtle, it appears!

  • Theman

Robots that look like us in a few years? Bladerunner? Is he trying to tie to worlds together?

  • Well, the Alien franchise has human-looking robots, but Ridley has said on the past that Alien and Blade Runner exist on the same ‘universe’.
