Monday Morning Box Office Report: The Vow Tops Huge Box Office Weekend

It doesn’t happen very often that four movies open with more than $20 million at the box office in one weekend. In fact, this is only the second time in history it has ever happened, and I believe it is the first time it has ever happened in February. Topping the box office with an impressive $41 million, the Channing Tatum / Rachel McAdams romance The Vow pulled in plenty of early Valentine’s Day business, but not far behind was the Denzel Washington / Ryan Reynolds thriller Safe House, which exceeded expectations and marked one of the strongest debuts ever for Denzel. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island also surprised everyone by coming in at #3 with $27 million, while Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3D opened at way down at #4. It still earned a respectable $23 mil — not bad, but not great either. Chronicle rounded out the top 5, meanwhile The Descendants continues to hang in the top 10 and is about to pass Sideways as Alexander Payne’s most successful movie to date. I think we can expect a lot of these movies to hold strong next weekend as well.

1. The Vow — $41.7M
2. Safe House — $39.3M
3. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island — $27.6M
4. Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace — $23M
5. Chronicle — $12.3M
6. The Woman in Black — $10.3M
7. The Grey — $5.08M
8. Big Miracle — $3.86M
9. The Descendants — $3.5M
10. Underworld: Awakening — $2.5M

Safe House looks like a fun ride, so definitely going to be checking that out.

I actually want to go to see Mysterious Island, since it seemed to have a nice sense of B Movieness to it, and seemed better than the first one anyway. I think trading Brendan Fraser for The Rock is okay.

I saw a trailer for The Vow and thought it looked like Channing’s Tatum took a dump all over the screen.
