  • Matt

    Hell Yeah!

  • Niklas

Frank is such a nintendo whore

  • Blake

I’m so aroused. I appreciate the Sony love from Frank. Next episode better feature some Arkham City, Battlefield 3, and Uncharted 3 talk!

  • Blake

I was hoping you guys would go into your reactions to X-Men: Destiny… your disappointments, your opinions of reviews on the game, what you thought the game would initially amount to, etc., etc..

  • Yeah I was going to talk a bit about X-Men Destiny on this episode but I decided to wait till I play through the whole thing. I don’t think Frank is really allowed to talk about it though.

  • Kasper

I love you Frank, nobody ever praises Crash Bandicoot <3

And I 100 % agree, all the other games are more or less garbage, except the racing games. But they’re all just copies of the original CTR anyway.

  • Sean, check out ScummVM — it’s a emulator that will allow you to play old LucasArts games on your computer, Zak McKraken included. And it’s not too difficult to find the game online either — I recommend the VGA version. It’s a great game, but nearly impossible without some help. Many of the puzzles are nonintuitive and you can easily get stuck in several insolvable puzzles pretty quick if you didn’t pick up the right item at the right time. That said, it’s vey very awesome.

  • Yeah I’ve played around with ScummVM a little bit. Tried to install it on my R4 card so I could play on the DS but I could never get it to work. I don’t play games on my PC very often so I was hoping to play it another way.

  • Kasper

Sean, Sean, Sean… You’re CRAZY! JRPG’s are the best. Can’t get enough Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Grandia and so on. I get a hard on just thinking about it.

  • fatbologna

I think you guys should do a review of Dark Souls for the next episode. It’s the best Japanese version of a Western RPG I’ve played and I’d argue it’s better than most WRPGs. I’d love to hear Sean’s reaction to it and I think that it’s the ultimate game for achievement whores to brag about so it might be up Frank’s alley.

I don’t actually think you guys should do that. All of you would probably hate it although it is definitely a fantastic game, as was Demon’s Souls.

  • Colin

I accept your Scene It challenge! I assume you have Box Office Smash for 360…

  • anonymiss

I LOVE IT!!!! make it more!!!!

  • Falsk

You know… I REALLY hate promoting this stereotype… but it seems like LA Noire is a girl game. Of all my gaming friends who have played it, my female friends really enjoyed it (myself included) and all my male friends weren’t into it…

  • Reboot must: For the NES, Dusty Diamond’s All-Star Softball . So awesome.

I think it would be awesome to make a slow-pitch softball game, maybe just a downloadalbe Xbox Arcade or a Wii game. This was an insanely fun NES game and I still play it with my brother. Anyone else ever play this?

  • Yep, love Dusty Diamond. I was actually going to mention that when I talked about the Street Sports series since I also had that in mind.

  • Henrik

Man, you guys barely scratched the surface of Chrono Trigger… I wanted to shake Frank when he was like “I was at the end of the game, but I didn’t play the sidequests”, this is supposed to be mr. completist? There’s so, so much stuff in this game to explore, storylines go all sorts of awesome places etc. Jeez, one of the more frustrating reviews I’ve heard, though the star ratings at least represented the level of quality of the game (could have been higher though, 5 out of 4 seems more appropriate).

Even for HuckCity who was supposed to be the fan, he really didn’t get into it with you guys. I guess you could go on and on and you were running long anyway, but I just wanted more. I mean the character discussion boiled down to Frank half-muttering “I love Frog”. WHY? Tell the world Frank, did you lose your passion for video games? Charged passing gets tirades, fucking ice hockey, oh man… I’m getting a little riled up.

The industry talk was great on this episode. It was really interesting, and the top 5 was great. Loved all that talk. I was expecting somebody to have tried Deus Ex: Human Revolution on this episode, but I’ll let it slide :P It was an awesome episode, I just wish you guys had gotten alittle more hardcore about Chrono Trigger. LOVE. that. game.

  • fatbologna

Taking into consideration Frank’s disappointment with modern cookie cutter game design as well as his obvious love of Japanese design and Huck’s desire for q game that drops you in without telling you anything, maybe Dark Douls IS worth a look from you guys.

It’s the most unique game I’ve played in recent memory and has fostered an obsessiveness that I haven’t experienced in many years. Check it out!!

  • fatbologna

Also, in regards to LA Noir’s cribbed story and characters, it’s WAY more James Ellroy than Mad Men beyond the use of actors. Every character and story element is taken from Ellroy’s books. The war element, the main character’s obsession with the woman, the serial Black Daliah style murders and who the killer ends up being, the zoot suit riot at the beginning, the Irish superior officer, the twist with the partner in the Vice section, the resolution with the main character and TONS of other stuff I won’t bother mentioning. The entire thing plays like a badly done greatest hits of James Ellroy and not in a flatterin way but in a wholesale ripoff kind of way.

LA Noire is the worst title Rockstar has ever published and I actually didn’t completely hate it when I was playing it.

It’s definitely better than Heavy Rain, though. The characters and story in that piece of shit were BRUTAL and frankly pretty embarassing across the board.

  • Jesus

Another podcast without any mention of Bf3. You guys fucking suck.

  • Jesus: I’m sure it will be fine. I just won’t be buying it. Too many damn games.

fatbologna: I’ll admit that there are a few things about Dark Souls that intrigue me but I refuse to go anywhere near a game that is “lauded” for its merciless difficulty.

  • Fatbologna

It’s definitely a hard game but it’s actually really manageable if you take your time and learn the combat system.

It actually reminds me a LOT of the older Castlevania games for the NES. There’s a TON of secret stuff that can make the game a lot easier early on as long as you know where to look, which also makes the online community really interesting in that it brings back the feel of old school games where everyone would get together on the playground and exchange secrets.

There’s also a really interesting series of online elements dealing with covenants, co-op and PVP that are the most original of any game this generation.

There’s covenants that you can join where you’re basically sent into other player’s games to grief them and steal their souls, but to counter that there’s covenants based around a “book of the guilty” wherein when you join, you’re given a ring and the game will pull you into griefer’s games to take out vengeance. They make it so you can earn souls by helping other players with bosses and tougher areas and it’s all done without any voice chat so the tone and feel of loneliness and isolation remain intact.

Both games are really amazing and original, I can already tell that they’ll be games I come back to for years after this generation is over. I feel like anyone who passes up at least trying either of them is missing out on 2 of the best games of the last 10 years.

  • Another great one, you guys. Thanks for reading my mail (ending the show with it, no less)!

As for the rest of the show, I have to somewhat agree with Henrik, Chrono Trigger is definitely a game that deserves more in depth looks. The characters and especially the branching story are second to none in the RPG genre imho.

I’d say it’s also a game best played with a walkthru of some kind. Especially if you have limited time and want to see the most the game has to offer, which it sounds like most of you do. At least, it sounded to me like you guys were pretty pressed for time and maybe some of you weren’t in the mood to play a retro RPG? shrug

Anyway, really enjoyed the look at the news from within the industry. That’s something you won’t get on many podcasts. Especially interested in the discussion about game end credits… was a little surprising really.

Here’s hoping for the next podcast before next year! (Probably not, huh?) :P

  • Gerry

    Another great episode.

Frank used a guide for LA Noire and then busted a gut to get a trophy for it. Don’t you get how OCD that is Frank?

Seriously, all 3 of you are very entertaining.

The only disappointment was the comments about curtailing ‘what we watched’ reviews because of lack of time.

Have more episodes. Lack of a main game review doesn’t matter. Expanded what we played reviews and discussion of news etc would do. Half the enjoyment of the podcast is the entertainment levels of the 3 presenters.

Film Junk and Game Junk are entertaining. Row Three is interesting but not as entertaining as the Junk podcasts.

Keep up the mighty fine work.

  • Matt

    Fuck Yeah!

  • Vikke_AJ

    Great show guys!

I would also definitely recommend ScummVM. It’s the best thing to happen for gaming in recent years :)

Zak McKracken is one of my favorite early LucasArts adventuregames… the FM Towns version is the best but very expensive if you want to get a 100% legal version :)

  • Jesse Bajenaru

Wow I almost gave up on Game junk, thought you guys were done with this. I thoroughly enjoyed all your past episodes. I just finished LA Noire so i look forward to listening to this, thanks!
